Local young athlete, Eda Colliver was recently selected for the GB Squad that is currently competing in the European Junior Water Polo Championships (1-9thSeptember) in Greece. Eda, 17 joined the Club so that she could keep to her vigorous training schedule, 10 sessions every week in the pool and gym.
Eda, who is also Head Girl at Bedford Modern School, has been swimming from a very early age and started competing at the tender age of 7. She took up water polo at 11, and the school immediately noticed her potential. She progressed through the school ranks, onto regional competitions, then to national team selection. After picking up bronze as part of the England team in the EU Nations Junior Women’s Tournament for the past two years and winning the Championship 1 British Water Polo League with Hucknall Water Polo Club, this season Eda was selected for the GB Squad.
We caught up with Eda last week ahead of the European Championships and she told us “I love swimming and water polo because of the extreme enjoyment it gives me every time I get in the pool. It allows me to constantly push myself to learn new skills, develop my technique and reach new levels that I didn’t think possible. It’s been a real help for my training programme to be able to come to the Club and either swim or train in the gym. It’s an honour to be selected and I’m looking forward to representing my country.”
The Championships started on the 1st September and England are off to a rough start losing to a tough German side, 12 – 3. Their next two games are against the Netherlands and Bulgaria. We wish Eda and all of the GB Squad the very best of luck for the next two days and hope they reach the next stages of the tournament. Whatever happens in Greece we are very proud to have such a talented sportswoman choose Club Towers for her training and we hope she inspires some future swimming stars.
